Driving Ambition is an incentive scheme enabling young adults with mental health conditions, to gain a full driving licence at the same time as improving their job prospects. The scheme is run out of FST’s SMaRT Garage Services in Bexley, West Norwood and Woolwich, SE London. It is based on a successful pilot, delivered by FST for 6 offenders from Thorn Cross Young Offenders Institution, Cheshire, all of whom passed their driving test and went on to find paid work.
Who Can Join?
Driving Ambition is aimed at young adults, aged 18-28 in receipt of secondary mental health services (please note: all participants need to meet the eligibility criteria set out by the DVLA). FST aims to be as inclusive as possible and works with people with a range of disadvantages, including those with a history of offending.
How It Works
When participants sign up to the Driving Ambition Programme they work with staff to identify their employment goals. Participants choose from a range of work experience available at FST’s social enterprises, from motor vehicle maintenance to bookkeeping, from catering to marketing. As an individual builds up their work experience and demonstrates their commitment to developing their employability, so they can access free driving lessons and other related support such as FST covering the cost of a provisional driving licence and taking the driving test.
